Allawi says Iraq headed for "sectarian autocracy" (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? The head of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya political bloc said Iraq "stands on the brink of disaster" and issued a list of demands on Wednesday in a political crisis triggered by charges against a Sunni leader.

Iraqiya leader Iyad Allawi, in an editorial for the New York Times, said Iraq was heading towards a "sectarian autocracy that carries with it the threat of devastating civil war."

Sectarian tensions are running high in Iraq ten days after the last U.S. troops pulled out. Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has sought the arrest of Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, accused of running death squads.

The commentary, co-authored by Iraqiya officials Osama al-Nujaifi, the parliament speaker, and Rafie al-Esawi, the finance minister, said bloc leaders were being "hounded and threatened by Mr. Maliki, who is attempting to drive us out of Iraqi political life and create an authoritarian one-party state."

The political crisis, Iraq's worst in a year, threatens Maliki's fragile year-old coalition government, an alliance of Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political blocs.

Nujaifi and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, on Tuesday proposed a national conference of political leaders to try to resolve the crisis and said allegations against Hashemi should be left to the courts.

But Allawi, in a separate statement, listed a series of demands before he would agree to any conference, including the release of "all detainees held on false charges" and the formation of a panel of top politicians to oversee and prevent interference in legal procedures.

Iraqiya has criticized a recent arrest campaign against hundreds of former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party over what some officials said was a plot to seize power after U.S. troops left.

Allawi also demanded the government implement an accord reached last year before the coalition government was formed that would have given him leadership of a new national policy council. Allawi has accused Maliki of reneging on the pact.

Allawi said "all options are still open" to resolve the crisis, including early elections and the possibility of a new candidate for prime minister.

Both Iraqiya and the Sadrist movement of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have called for new elections, currently not due until 2014.

Iraq's latest crisis was triggered by the charges against Hashemi and Maliki's request to parliament to fire Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq. Hashemi and Mutlaq are two of the most senior figures in Iraqiya.

In the editorial, Allawi, a former prime minister, said Maliki had "laid siege to our party," surrounding leaders' homes and offices in Baghdad's Green Zone with government forces.

"...as Iraq once again teeters on the brink, we respectfully ask America's leaders to understand that unconditional support for Mr. Maliki is pushing Iraq down the path to civil war," the editorial said.

"Unless America acts rapidly to help create a successful unity government, Iraq is doomed."

U.S. and Iraqi officials have been engaged in a flurry of talks to try ease tensions in a crisis that could have wider impact in the region with Iraq's Sunni and Shi'ite neighbors.

US Army's A160 Hummingbird drone-copter to don 1.8 gigapixel camera

Starting in July of 2012, the United States Army will deploy three Boeing A160 Hummingbird drones to Afghanistan as part of a one-year trial program. Unlike the Predator drones already in combat, the A160 is a rotor-based aircraft capable of vertical take-offs and landings. What's more, the craft will be affixed with the DARPA-developed ARGUS-IS imaging system -- which boasts a 1.8 gigapixel camera the Army says can "track people and vehicles from altitudes above 20,000 feet." The A160 Hummingbird platform will provide the Army with the ability and flexibility to: take off and land without a runway; fly for twelve hours or more without refueling; and monitor up to 65 enemies of the State simultaneously. Test flights of the unmanned chopper are scheduled for early 2012 in Arizona, but residents hoping to get a glimpse of the A160 in action best have great eyesight -- the ARGUS-IS system can see targets from almost 25-miles down range. Oh, and don't forget to smile when you look up. You want to look your best for the eye in the sky, right?

Top Pick Apps for Android Smartphones and Tablets

There are a heck of a lot of Android apps in the Market, and wading through them now that you've got your new phone or tablet in hand can be daunting. I'm sharing my short list of apps that I put on all my Andies, and these work both on Android smartphones and tablets. Of course, there are plenty more worth trying out, but this is a good start!

Entertainment

1. Movies by Flixster

Check out what's new at the box office, what's playing in your area, and get reviews and movie trailers too.

2. IMDB

The Android version of this extremely popular website gives you everything you need to know about movies and TV shows with serious historical depth. Cast, crew, directors and more.

3. Netflix

This one is only useful if you have an $8/month Netflix streaming account. If you do, then you can watch anything that's available in Netflix's streaming catalog on your phone or tablet. Quality is good, even over a decent 3G connection, but watch out, you can eat through your data bucket in a marathon day of movie-watching (WiFi is your friend). Hulu Plus gets an honorable mention, but Netflix is available for all Android devices running OS 2.2 or higher, which Hulu Plus supports only a short list of Android devices.

News and Weather

1. Weatherbug and The Weather Channel

There are several solid weather apps, but so far these two are stable and don't cause undue battery drain with background updates and weather warnings. Each has animated weather radar, current weather and long term forecasts.

2. Pulse

A highly graphical and pleasing news feed and RSS reader that's particularly well suited to tablets with their larger displays. It's fast, you can customize your news feeds, use your Google news feed sources and get background updates.

3. Google Currents

Google's very recently released RSS news reader is pure eye candy, something we don't generally associate with Google and their utilitarian and simple esthetic. Currents gives a print like magazine look to your news feeds, and it's stunning to look at and enjoyable. The app might take a little time to process your feeds if Google hasn't already processed and formatted that RSS feed before, but once it's done it's reasonably fast, though not as quick as the less fancied-up Pulse.

4. News360

There are phone and tablet versions of this app, and we particularly like the tablet version because the rich presentation works better on larger screens. News360 covers breaking news in a visually appealing and accessible way. You'll get several sources for popular news items, just in case, you know... you don't trust the press and want to see the story from a few different angles.

Games

There are lots of pay-for games, fremium games (free to play but in-game purchases might cost you more in the end) and some free games too.

1. Bonsai Blast!

A free Zuma style game with pretty settings and relaxing sound effects.

2. Riptide GP

This $2.99 water racing game by Vector Unit is seriously fun and it looks great too. Good controls and compatibility.

3. Grand Theft Auto III

Maybe not the game to gets your young'uns, but for the those who love some serious mayhem in the city and look fondly back at Rockstar's very successful franchise, GTA III brings decent graphics and very good controls to the recently released Android version of the game. It's on sale for $2.99 until Dec. 29, 2011.

4. Fieldrunners HD

This $2.99 tower defense game has won lots of high ratings and awards because it's seriously fun with good graphics and it runs on most every Android device.

Social Networking

Your phone or tablet might come with a good integrated social networking client that handles Facebook and Twitter. Both HTC and Samsung include solid social networking apps with companion widgets. But if those aren't your cup of tea or you own a different brand phone, here are a few solid options.

1. Tweetcaster

Tweetcaster is available as a free app (with ads that are tolerable) and a $4.99 paid version without ads. It's been my favorite for many months thanks to flexible notifications, an attractive presentation and a full set of features. It supports multiple accounts, simultaneous posting to Twitter and Facebook, retweeting, long tweets (twitlonger) and trends.

2. Tweetdeck

Popular on desktops, Tweetdeck is available free for mobiles too. The Android version handles Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Buzz (does anyone care about Buzz?). Plenty of features, background updates and stable on both smartphones and tablets.

Top-Flite Gamer V2 Golf Balls ? 24 Pack - $19.99

Go Putt Yourself

Hey buddy! Sorry you had to miss our golfing trip to Aruba, but I?m sending you a consolation prize!

I?don?t have a whole lot of time to write at the moment. My morning massage ran long ? no clocks out on the beach, ha ha ? and I?ve got to put on another layer of sunscreen before today?s tee time. But I just remembered something: I was so distracted the last few weeks planning for this trip, I totally forgot to get you anything for Christmas! And after you agreed to shovel my sidewalk and keep my pipes unfrozen while I was gone. I felt terrible.

So before the poolside mimosa buffet this morning, I slipped on my flip-flops and popped down to the pro shop to pick you up a 24-pack of Top-Flite Gamer V2 Golf Balls. Their dimple-in-dimple technology helped me shoot a 73 yesterday, and it probably would?ve been more like a 71 if I hadn?t been distracted by the bikini fashion show over on the beach. That softer, thinner cover and more resilient core should do wonders for both your distance and your short game, especially with those new clubs of yours. In five or six months, anyway, when you can finally use them.

Well, I gotta run. This whole trip has been go, go, go ? golfing, scuba diving, salsa dancing, and the second I stop to take a breather, somebody shoves a margarita in my hand and slides a platter of fajitas in front of me. I swear, I?m gonna need a vacation after this vacation, heh! It would?ve been great if you?d been able to make it down. But hey, at least you?ve got some new Top-Flite Gamer V2 Golf Balls!

Wives in ads, kids on the bus as GOP voting nears (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

GTA III goes on sale for the holidays, brings violence and cheer to Galaxy Nexus owners

GTA3 on Galaxy Nexus
A classic title like Grand Theft Auto III isn't exactly at hard sell at $5 on your smartphone or tablet -- at $3 you're almost a fool not to snatch it up. Perhaps more importantly though, Rockstar has expanded support for the crime adventure to a trio of Android handsets -- the Droid Bionic, Galaxy S II and, the phone of the moment, the Galaxy Nexus. While the white list only gains three new devices right now, there's potential to add more handsets down the line. The game is finally optimized for use with PowerVR GPUs, which are found in any phone running an OMAP or Exynos processor. So, what are you waiting for? Hit up the market now to get your dose of violence, mayhem and hall of fame gaming.
