Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers have identified how one of the genes most commonly mutated in lung cancer may promote such tumors.

The investigators found that the protein encoded by this gene, called EPHA3, normally inhibits tumor formation, and that loss or mutation of the gene as often happens in lung cancer diminishes this tumor-suppressive effect, potentially sparking the formation of lung cancer. The findings, published July 24 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, could offer direction for personalizing cancer treatments and development of new therapies.

The ephrin family of receptors (EPH receptors) comprises a large group of cell surface proteins that regulate cell-to-cell communication in normal development and disease. EPH receptor mutations have been linked to several different cancer types.

Jin Chen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Medicine, Cancer Biology and Cell & Developmental Biology, studies the cancer-associated roles of these receptors. While her lab has focused primarily on EPHA2 (and its role in promoting breast cancer and tumor blood vessel formation), she decided to look at a different ephrin receptor based on the findings of large genomic screens of lung tumors.

"A 2008 genome-wide study published in Nature identified 26 genes as potential drivers of lung cancer," Chen said. "One of them was EPHA3."

That study and others suggested that mutations in EPHA3 were present in 5 percent to 10 percent of lung adenocarcinomas. However, the studies did not reveal how these mutations might promote tumor formation or progression.

Chen wanted to investigate further whether mutations in EPHA3 were actually "drivers" of lung cancer or just neutral "passenger" mutations and how the mutations might promote tumor growth.

The researchers generated and analyzed 15 different mutations in the receptor. They found that at least two functioned as "dominant negative" inhibitors of the EPHA3 protein that is, having a mutation in just one allele (or "copy" humans have two copies of each gene) was enough to inhibit the function of EPHA3.

Chen and colleagues determined that normal or "wild type" EPHA3 inhibits a downstream signaling pathway (the Akt pathway) that promotes cell survival so, normally, activation of EPHA3 acts as a "brake" on cell growth and survival and induces programmed cell death (apoptosis). When one EPHA3 allele is lost (due to a mutation), the receptor cannot be activated and the Akt pathway remains active, which promotes cell growth and survival.

To determine the impact of EPHA3 mutations on human lung cancer cases, biostatisticians Yu Shyr, Ph.D., and Fei Ye, Ph.D., helped Chen's group identify a mutational signature from existing patient data that strongly correlated with poor patient survival. The team also found that both gene and protein levels of EPHA3 were decreased in patient lung tumors.

While previous studies had linked EPHA3 mutations to lung cancer, the current study is the first to "connect the dots."

"The EPH family is such a big family that nobody had really connected the data from bench top from the cell and biochemical studies to human data," Chen said.

Together, the findings suggest that mutations in EPHA3 may be important drivers of a significant fraction of lung cancers. And the research team's identification of the biochemical and cellular consequences of EPHA3 mutations suggests that therapies that target a downstream pathway (such as Akt) might be beneficial for tumors with mutant EPHA3.

Recap: Milwaukee vs. Washington

Michael Morse clubbed a game-tying, two-run homer in the ninth to send the game to extras, and then ripped a go-ahead, two-run double in the 11th as the Nationals took a thrilling 11-10 victory over the Brewers in the finale of a four-game set Sunday at Miller Park.

Washington trailed 7-3 heading into the eighth, but used a four-run frame to tie the game. Milwaukee countered in the bottom half as Norichika Aoki and Carlos Gomez stroked back-to-back homers to make it a two-run game, but Morse launched a one-out, two-run shot over the wall in right to tie the game again in the ninth.

In the 11th, Jose Veras (3-4) issued a leadoff walk to Bryce Harper, who then went first-to-third on a single into right field from Ryan Zimmerman.

After Mark DeRosa fanned, Morse pulled a double down the left-field line to plate Harper and Zimmerman as the Nationals grabbed a two-run lead.

Tyler Clippard worked around a leadoff homer from Corey Hart in the 11th to nail down his 20th save of the season, while Craig Stammen (4-1) earned the victory after tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Roger Bernadina smacked a two-run homer as part of Washington's four-run eighth inning as the Nationals won for the eighth time in their last nine contests.

"Every game is the most important game," said Washington manager Davey Johnson. "I never worry about things. I have no control over it. I have a good ball club and I expect them to play good. If we play like we're capable of playing I won't worry about things."

Rickie Weeks belted a two-run shot and Hart finished with four hits and scored three times for the Brewers, who lost for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Mark Rogers made his first start in nearly two years for the Brewers after being recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start for Zack Greinke, who was shipped to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

Roger's return got off to a rocky start as Steve Lombardozzi crushed the fifth pitch of the game over the right-field wall to give Washington a 1-0 lead.

The Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom half and Jonathan Lucroy then earned a free pass on five pitches to tie the game.

Cody Ransom slapped the next pitch back to the mound, but it snuck under Washington starter Gio Gonzalez's glove, allowing Hart to score as the Brewers took a 2-1 edge.

Milwaukee added to its lead in the third as Ryan Braun coaxed a leadoff walk before Hart ripped a line-drive base hit to left. Braun moved to third on the play and alertly took home as the Nationals caught Hart in a rundown between first and second base to provide the home team with a 3-1 lead.

The Nationals trimmed the margin in the sixth as Tyler Moore plated Zimmerman, who doubled to start the frame, with a two-bagger of his own, but the Brewers responded in the bottom half as Lucroy singled and Ransom walked before both runners advanced on a bunt from Cesar Izturis.

Pinch-hitter Aramis Ramirez was then intentionally walked to load the bases and Aoki followed with a suicide-squeeze attempt. Gonzalez fielded the bunt and fired to first, but his throw pulled Lombardozzi off the first-base bag, allowing Lucroy to score and keeping the bases loaded.

Gomez then plated Ransom with a sacrifice fly to center before Gonzalez fanned Braun to end the frame with the Brewers holding a 5-2 lead.

Zimmerman's double-play groundout plated a run in the seventh, but Weeks' two- run homer in the bottom half extended the margin to 7-3.

Bernadina's third homer of the year cut the deficit to just two in the eighth before Jesus Flores singled and John Axford served up a double to Corey Brown.

Lombardozzi then grounded out to second to plate Flores before Axford uncorked a wild pitch and Brown scampered home from the third to knot the game at 7-7.

"We battled to the end but we just didn't pitch well enough out of the bullpen again," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke.

10 Reasons to Drop Windows for Mountain Lion

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Syrian rebels survive onslaught in key city of Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said there thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

Unified communications (UC) federation is not a novel idea. Users ...

Microsoft is pushing UC federation forward, unveiling new Office 2013 integration. Microsoft Lync ? an enterprise-grade UC tool for IM, presence, voice and video ? will now connect with users on Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and AOL Instant Messenger.

And what about Skype? The company has remained tight-lipped about Skype?s exact role in Office 2013, but the video conferencing application acquired by Microsoft last year will be federated with Lync eventually. Users will be able to connect with Skype contacts via voice and IMs, and share presence status.

?Integrating Skype across the Microsoft portfolio is an ambitious effort and a long-term investment, and we think these integration steps are exciting,? Microsoft said in an email response, noting that business users will also be able to video chat via Skype in future Lync releases.

Enterprises believe UC federation is essential to making UC tools easier to use. They want to give users the ability to swiftly communicate and collaborate with outside business partners and clients without a variety of logins to bypass, and hoops to jump through. UC federation is a way of getting there.

Microsoft UC federation strategy: Skype now included
Skype?s integration with Lync was an expected move on Microsoft?s part and will be similar to the IBM Lotus Notes and LinkedIn integration ? a plug-in connecting the two applications that allows LinkedIn contact information to be pulled into Lotus Notes, according to Irwin Lazar, vice president and service director at Mokena, Ill.-based Nemertes Research Group Inc.

When will UC federation happen?

?[Users] will be able to see someone?s Skype information if they are in their Lync address book, and then be able to click-to-call that user,? he said. This basic functionality will be a ?starting point? for further Skype integration into the Microsoft portfolio, he added.

While Skype was originally perceived as a potential threat to enterprise security, the application is moving away from its consumer tool roots and has become increasingly accepted as a business-conferencing tool ? especially for smaller companies. Yet even larger enterprises are embracing it.

By federating Skype with Lync or any other internal IM client, enterprises could impose controls for tracking communication among users. Regulated companies could gain better visibility into user communication and even be able to block certain transfers of data and files, Lazar said.

?Everyone has a Skype account today, so for a company that wants to collaborate both internally and externally, Skype is really the de facto standard for communication right now,? Lazar said.

Can further Skype integrations give UC federation a boost?
While UC vendors have been working toward interoperability with one another, interoperability with Skype has been slow to materialize, said Melanie Turek, vice president of research at Frost & Sullivan Inc. And yet, Skype is much more accessible to users.

?Users don?t have to get permission from IT to use Skype,? she said, noting that many enterprise users are turning to Skype to get their work done. The more Skype can be integrated into existing UC tools sanctioned by IT like Microsoft Office and Lync, the better, she said.

Turek predicts more interesting Skype uses and further integrations of the application into the Microsoft portfolio ? both in enterprise and consumer products.

?Microsoft now owns arguably the largest IM client in the world,? she said. ?[Skype] has a huge footprint in the universe and it really includes everyone. Any Skype integration will be very valuable for enterprise users,? she said.

5 New Rules For Online Business Branding | Business Computing ...

Nowadays, it is no longer enough for businesses to have a cool, sleek website, a few social media profiles, and consistent branding. The fresh rules for online business branding are now focused on engagement and interaction, and less on presentation. Defining your brand is more like a journey of business discovery.

Yes, it can be time-consuming, hard, and uncomfortable. Whether you are managing a printer dealership business or a home maintenance firm, step up the branding game with the help of our insider tips and tricks. Here are a few of the newest rules in branding your business on the Internet today.

1. Don?t just begin the conversation

Your brand needs to be an evolving and integral part of the conversations happening online. Social media has a very important prospective to work with brand management?and that is the conversation. Just like brand management, social networking is about conversations and developing effective relationships.

The principles for brand messaging across new media and classic channels haven?t really changed, but they are held to a higher standard. Today, it isn?t enough to simply have a Twitter or Facebook page; you need to engage with your fans and followers by sharing posts and answering messages sent by customers.

Maintaining and tracking social media is a must for small and big businesses. Social media tends to have shortened time frame for responses to accusations or complaints. Companies need to identify and acknowledge issues and control messaging in a matter of minutes, instead of hours and days.

2. Keep your personal brand away

So now that you have more than ten thousand followers on Twitter, does it mean anything to your clients? Growing a personal brand is a big distraction for most founders. Steve Job has his own personal brand, however, it is still Apple?s design that makes it a valuable firm. He didn?t jump on FourSquare to develop his brand.

3. Dive in and hit the headlines

Establishing your expertise in the industry is very beneficial in brand management. To attract the press, determine media forms that are applicable to your expertise and send targeted pitches. For instance, if you have an interview for television or radio, make sure you offer a personality preview by sending them links to videos on your website.

As soon as you have developed an expertise, take it on the road. Attending conferences and being an active member of professional organizations provides priceless networking opportunities. Participating in a vendor event can also provide long-term branding benefits.

4. Find and target your brand niche

Even if you are venturing into an already crowded marketplace, you will have the opportunity to make your brand stand out. In the past, people used to think that there was only one name in printers. Today, electronic stores carry more than a dozen types of wireless printers or colour laser printers. A lot of marketers tend to give up way too soon with differentiation. Today?s rapidly shifting marketplace demands a more creative approach. So hang in there and be persistent with your branding efforts.

5. Fully engage with social media

You will not only look modern, savvy, and trendy, but it also improves connectivity and attracts more traffic to your site. You don?t need to use an expensive advertising agency nor create a viral marketing video to improve traffic. You need elbow grease, several tricks on your sleeves, and a commitment in making your website a top destination for users. Add social share buttons, run a weekly blog, use search engine optimization, and build your website with links.

6. Showcase premier work

With today?s highly competitive marketplace, a strong brand is really all about relationships and trust. And with this vision in mind, there is no better method to build a brand than by publishing any of your pages as a visual element. Mention recognitions and awards your company has achieved, as well as green initiatives, interesting facts, and community service work.

Chick-fil-A VP of public relations dies of heart attack

Chick-fil-A's Vice President of Public Relations Don Perry died "suddenly" Friday morning, the company confirmed. Perry was based in the Atlanta area and worked in Chick-fil-A's corporate communications department.

Perry's death comes amid controversy this week over comments that Chick-fil-A's CEO Dan Cathy made against gay marriage. Cathy told the Baptist Press that he was "guilty as charged" for supporting "the biblical definition of the family unit."

In response to the backlash, conservative commentator Mike Huckabee organized a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day , calling on people who support the company's Christian values to eat at Chick-fil-A next Wednesday.

"Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1," Huckabee wrote on the Facebook page created for the event.

So far nearly 300,000 people have signed on to attend the event.

Read more about that controversy here.

Here is the full statement from Chick-fil-A on Perry's death:

"We are saddened to report the news to you that our dear friend Don Perry, vice president of public relations, passed away suddenly this morning.

Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years. For many of you in the media, he was the spokesperson for Chick-fil-A. He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Google search nerds up, adds fullbutton scientific calculator

Search is Google's bread and butter, so it stands to reason the company would want to cram in as much universal functionality to that unassuming text box as possible. After having integrated graphing capabilities this past Winter, the Mountain View gang's at it again, expanding the breadth of its moneymaker with a full, pop-up scientific calculator. Users that input the beginnings of an equation from either the desktop site or mobile version (landscape only) will instantly see a 32-button layout appear in the space below, mapped for all the mathematical functions your left brain can't handle alone. The calculator can also be triggered by voice commands, so those of you averse to thumb-smashing will have the luxury of barking those algebraic equations straight into your handset. It's live now for the testing, but we warn you, it's no replacement for that game-filled TI-83.

Collaborative Learning Startup Skillshare Introduces New Tools For Sharing Notes And Asking Questions

SkillshareSkillshare is devoted to the idea that people should be able to teach each other things, and has created a marketplace whereby anyone can create or attend a class of their choosing. Like an Eventbrite for peer-to-peer learning. But until today, it lacked a lot of the collaborative learning tools that teachers and students need to facilitate that process. So it's rolling out The Classroom, a new place where teachers and students can exchange notes, ask questions, and share resources. The idea for the Classroom came about after Skillshare saw how its students and teachers were interacting with each ever since launching last year, according to founder and CEO Mike Karnjanaprakorn. While it launched purely as a ticketing system for classes, it saw users interacting with each other on social networks, emailing course materials and sharing links on Facebook. So it decided to bring all of those features onto its site, as a way to aggregate the discussion in a single place and also to increase engagement and the usefulness of its site.

Brand gets community service in New Orleans case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Actor and comedian Russell Brand must perform 20 hours of community service and pay a $500 court fee to resolve a misdemeanor charge over a confrontation with a photographer in New Orleans, where he was filming a movie in March.

Brand wasn't in a New Orleans courtroom Thursday when his attorney, Robert Glass, entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf to a charge of simple criminal damage to property. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail.

Brand turned himself in to police three days after his encounter with a man trying to take his picture with a phone. Police said Brand grabbed the phone and threw it at a building, breaking a window.

"He's a good guy," Glass said. "He was harassed."

A deal with the district attorney's office calls for the case to be dismissed if the actor completes the service requirement by Aug. 31, Glass said.

"You'll return with proof that Mr. Brand completed the community service?" Municipal Court Judge Sean Early asked.

"Correct," Glass responded.

Glass said Brand may fulfill the requirement through his charitable work with people suffering from addictions.

"Some of it may be abroad in England. Some of it may be in California," Glass said.

Brand's publicists didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

In a Twitter posting after the incident, Brand wrote, "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory."

Brand's film credits include "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek." He has a late-night show on FX called "Brand X with Russell Brand."

A judge granted him a divorce from singer Katy Perry in February.

When the Olympics Awarded Medals to Artists

Walter Winans won an Olympic gold for sculpture in 1912 Image: Courtesy of Bain News Service

From Our Partner

At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, American Walter Winans took the podium and waved proudly to the crowd. He had already won two Olympic medals?a gold for sharpshooting at the 1908 London Games, as well as a silver for the same event in 1912?but the gold he won at Stockholm wasn?t for shooting, or running, or anything particularly athletic at all. It was instead awarded for a small piece of bronze he had cast earlier that year: a 20-inch-tall horse pulling a small chariot. For his work, An American Trotter, Winans won the first ever Olympic gold medal for sculpture.

For the first four decades of competition, the Olympics awarded official medals for painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and music, alongside those for the athletic competitions. From 1912 to 1952, juries awarded a total of 151 medals to original works in the fine arts inspired by athletic endeavors. Now, on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the first artistic competition, even Olympics fanatics are unaware that arts, along with athletics, were a part of the modern Games nearly from the start.

?Everyone that I?ve ever spoken to about it has been surprised,? says Richard Stanton, author of The Forgotten Olympic Art Competitions. ?I first found out about it reading a history book, when I came across a little comment about Olympic art competitions, and I just said, ?what competitions??? Propelled by curiosity, he wrote the first?and still the only?English-language book ever published on the subject.

To learn about the overlooked topic, Stanton had to dig through crumbling boxes of often-illegible files from the International Olympic Committee archives in Switzerland?many of which hadn?t seen the light of day since they were packed away decades ago. He discovered that the story went all the way back to the Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the IOC and the modern Games, who saw art competitions as integral to his vision of the Olympics. ?He was raised and educated classically, and he was particularly impressed with the idea of what it meant to be a true Olympian?someone who was not only athletic, but skilled in music and literature,? Stanton says. ?He felt that in order to recreate the events in modern times, it would be incomplete to not include some aspect of the arts.?

At the turn of the century, as the baron struggled to build the modern Olympics from scratch, he was unable to convince overextended local organizers of the first few Games in Athens, St. Louis and Paris that arts competitions were necessary. But he remained adamant. ?There is only one difference between our Olympiads and plain sporting championships, and it is precisely the contests of art as they existed in the Olympiads of Ancient Greece, where sport exhibitions walked in equality with artistic exhibitions,? he declared.

Bridal Party: Fight Evil Wedding Traditions with a DIY Invitation ...

Hello again, Bitch readers! I fear I've been a real mellow-harshing brigade when it comes to wedding traditions. AND we've yet to really get into the ways in which couples of all stripes who choose to get married can subvert and/or bypass all the messed up hoopla and soul crushing lack of romanticism that is the real history of weddings.

Let's start!

Within the wedding planning chronology (after the couple's decision to do it), the "You're Invited" phase is the first stop along the path.?

You're probably thinking "Oh lord. Is Michael going to ruin my fun associations about wedding invitations, too?" Answer: Yes. But then it's going to be so much more fun! Michael taketh away, but Michael giveth, too.

Ever wonder why you get so many wedding invitations done in calligraphy? It's not just because calligraphy is pretty. The practice of written wedding invitations began with the royals and the social/economically elite way back in the early years of the 1700s.?They were the only people who were both literate and could afford... a CALLIGRAPHER.?

Everybody else got a wedding invitation in the form of a town crier who would wander through the village and countryside yelling the invitation. If you heard him yell about it, you were invited. If you missed his yelling, you couldn't come. That actually sounds kind of fun, but difficult for planning purposes.?

You probably already know that in straight weddings, the tradition of the bride's family being the hosts on the invitation comes from the fact that the bride's family traditionally paid for the wedding. This emerged from the history of the?bride price?and then?dowries, which eventually fell out of favor. But even so the bride still needed a dress, cake, decor, etc., all of which were made (paid for) by her family.

Now everyone just does that stuff for us, but because it comes from the bridal half of the tradition, weddings are still thought of as the bride's deal, not the groom's. Hence, the bride's family traditionally hosting (paying for) the wedding and the nasty Hollywood hetero-theme of the bridezilla who plans every aspect of the wedding as the groom sits idly by vaguely dreading marriage.

That's right! Traditional wedding invitations are another way in which the "under classes" have over time sought to emulate the 1%. Meaning that all of the big elements of weddings have their roots in social elitism, economic disparity, and/or the dehumanization of women.

Trash that.

Oh HAI, DIY!

Want to skip the economically elitist wedding cost expectations? Want to make your wedding actually about?your?relationship, like everyone says it should be? Well, then throw all the templates out and do it yourself. Forget calligraphy, in straight weddings forget expecting the bride's family to pay, forget everything you think of when you think of weddings.

The best wedding invites and save the dates I've ever received came from couples who designed them (and their weddings) around their relationship's personality. Nowadays there are all sorts of excellent approaches?when it comes to doing your wedding invites yourself.

Below are a few ideas to whet your appetite.

1. The Interactive Invitation

Since we are social animals, everything we do is on some level a social dynamic and therefore participatory. Even weddings and relationships.

By making your guests subtly feel involved and included (as opposed to idle spectators), you're also pretty much guaranteeing their unabashed excitement and enthusiastic support. It's also an awesome way to set the tone and aesthetic mood of the actual wedding day.

Beyond that, you can pretty much guarantee that no snooty royal ever used a viewmaster as a wedding invite.

There are all sorts of ways to DIY an interactive invite, which, environmental bonus: upcycling. Also, to cut back on materials and waste, sending an e-save the date rather than a physical one is increasingly popular. If you have older folks who aren't too tech-savvy being invited, then send them a snail mail version of the e-invite.?

? ? ? ? ???

2. Letterpress/Screen Printing

Want a less whimsical look? Employ an artist! Or use skills that you already have and get your invites letterpress or screen printed.

? ? ??

?

3. It's All About You

Design your invitation elements around your personality or around the sort of wedding you're having. One of my longstanding hobbies is making archival treasure boxes, so for our wedding we made a series of treasure box invitations that reflected the landscape and location where the ceremony would be. Each cigar box had a theme based on where the guest was staying and contents within each box highlighted the theme. Everything was a found object.?

An important part of our plan was to make something that people would keep, rather than send immediately to a landfill.

? ? ???? ??

?

My personal theory is that the popularity of?DIY weddings?has spiked during the time that the "marriage?equality"?debate has been at the forefront of culture and politics. With anti-same-sex marriage folks calling for upholding "tradition" and "sanctity" came the inevitable flip side of people investigating the?actual?"tradition" and "sanctity" of marital history. Which has a pretty lousy track record.?

DIY, then, with its emphasis on indiviuality, economic frugality, and some degree of environmental mindlfulness, is a great way to kick off your wedding season with a stand against traditional wedding elements that perpetuate cultural lineages that sit sour on the palate. Beyond that, though, DIY invitations can facilitate a meaningful process of reflection and thoughtfulness with regard to why and how you're doing your wedding.?

Thoughtfulness never hurt anyone.?

Benefits Of Hiring The Services Of An IP Firm For Your Trademark ...

A trademark is a name or symbol that represents a company or product brand. It comprises a word, phrase, symbol or design that serves as a distinguishable feature of one product or service and sets it apart from others of a similar nature.

Although it?s not mandatory to register a trademark, doing so can bring a lot of benefits to a business owner. One of them is he or she can provide licenses and franchises to interested parties. This signifies another efficient revenue stream. Owning a legitimate trademark also prevents other people from using similar terms or names, or designs that have semblance to your trademark, which, in turn, provide an unlevel playing field and unfair competition. Nowadays, website owners also get legal protection by allowing them to register their business? internet domain.

In the Lion City, it is the Intellectual Property of Singapore (an agency under the Ministry Law) that processes the registration of trademarks. Si ngapore also offers a more convenient and easier trademark registration procedure with the help of certified registration firms.

Although it is not discouraged to file directly with IPOS, engaging the services of a registration agency saves the business or brand owner time, money and effort. The standards set by the International Classification of Goods and Services serve as the basis of classifications for trademark registration in Singapore. And while trademark registration is not compulsory, a business person who does own registered marks acquire common law rights.

There are, however, certain marks that the Intellectual Property Office cannot provide legal protection. For instance, the Trademark Law in Singapore does not encourage the application for the registration of descriptive marks. Also, IPOS do not provide certification to owners of marks that are common to the trade or contrary to public policy or morality. Consulting with a certified registration age ncy can help business owners in understanding the trademark policies, particularly on how they can protect their brand through intellectual property rights.

(AP Photo)

(AP) ? Egypt's president on Tuesday appointed a young, independent U.S.-educated Cabinet minister as the new premier, assigned to turn the nation's economy and internal security around after 17 months of instability and protests.

The designation of Hesham Kandil comes nearly a month after President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was sworn in as Egypt's first freely elected civilian president. The time it took just to select a prime minister reflects the difficulties Morsi has had in putting together an administration.

"Patience is required," Kandil said in a short televised address after his appointment was announced, following a meeting with Morsi on Tuesday. Delivering what he said was a joint message, Kandil called for unity in the face of serious challenges.

The military, which took power after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak last year, still holds the final say over much of Egypt's governing, leaving it unclear what the new prime minister's powers will be.

Already the military has said that it, not the civilian government, appoints the defense minister.

Kandil, an engineer in his 40s, will have to consult with the president before naming the other Cabinet ministers.

Morsi had promised to pick someone from outside the Brotherhood to lead a unity government that would include other political factions. Kandil does not have any affiliation with Islamist groups or political parties, state TV said.

Kandil is believed to be religious on a personal level, wearing a light beard and interspersing his past comments to the news media with religious references.

Emad Gad of the liberal Social Democratic Party said many of the well-known figures suggested for prime minister did not want the job because they felt it would be nothing more than a vehicle to execute Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood's program, known as "the Renaissance project," aimed at overhauling the government and economy.

Gad said he believes the Brotherhood's executive council had considerable say in Kandil's selection.

"They brought in someone who is not from the Brotherhood, but whose ideology is similar," he said.

The opposition April 6 movement, which helped engineer last year's uprising, said people are confused about why Kandil was selected, but that it is too early to pass judgment on him.

Morsi's spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the "the appointment of a patriotic, independent figure was studied and discussed."

The spokesman for the ultraconservative Islamic Al-Nour Party said Kandil's selection came as a surprise, but he is an acceptable choice.

"He has many issues to deal with, starting with lawlessness," Yousseri Hamad said. Al-Nour indicated it would consider joining the new government if asked.

Kandil is the minister of water resources and irrigation in the outgoing military-appointed government. He earned his masters and doctorate degrees at the University of North Carolina and worked at the African Development Bank, focusing on Nile Basin countries. He was part of an observer mission for Egypt in talks with Sudan on Nile River water issues.

He was brought into the government after Mubarak's fall, serving under Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri, 78, a Mubarak-era prime minister reappointed to the post by the military in late 2011.

Differences between the Brotherhood, which held the most seats in parliament before the legislature was dissolved last month, and the outgoing Cabinet has so far cost Egypt a vital inflow of financial assistance.

Because of the turmoil in the country, which dried up tourism and foreign investments, Egypt's foreign currency reserves dropped by more than one-half since the popular uprising. Cairo asked the International Monetary Fund for a $3.2 billion aid package. The IMF insists on political consensus in Cairo before approving the loan.

The Brotherhood has been at odds with the Cabinet's spending and repaying scheme for the loan, and that has stalled its approval.

provoked A modest sell-off in Egyptian markets followed news of Kandil's appointment.

The London-based Capital Economics consulting firm said investors were hoping the new prime minister would come from an economics background "so that much-needed reforms are implemented and the economy can be put back on track."

The main problem is that even if Kandil were a leading economic figure, he would still have little control over policy. The powers of the president himself, as well as his Cabinet, are unclear,.

Just before Morsi took office, the military dissolved parliament and took over legislative powers.

Although Morsi's spokesman on Tuesday reiterated support for a unity government, some in the opposition want no part in it.

Gad said his Social Democratic Party, which won just a handful of seats in parliament, will not join the new government because its failures and successes should be the Brotherhood's alone to shoulder.

"They have their own Renaissance project that they want to execute. We are not convinced of their program, so we will not take part in it," Gad said.

Interesting Facts On Natural Eye Care Products And Exercises ...

Many people suffer from eye care problems, and although a lot of people mistakenly think that there are only prescription medicines and medications available to help with these sorts of eye problems, this is actually very untrue. In fact, there are a number of different natural eye care products and exercises that will be of great help here.

Natural Eye Care Exercises

Whether you have got a lazy eye, glaucoma, or some other eye problem, there are numerous different natural eye care exercises you can do which may help it. A regular vision fitness schedule will significantly ease eye pain overall and just as you want to continually exercise the remainder of your body the same rule is applicable to your eyes also.

Regular eye exercises are important because they can help various different eye conditions, and replace conventional treatments such as prescription medications. Head rolls are one type of exercise that are great for your eyes, and all you need to do here is take a deep breath and close your eyes, then when you exhale, drop your chin to your chest slowly.

As you go to breathe, you slowly roll your head around to the left hand side and then back again, ensuring that your shoulders and neck are relaxed all of the time. Then exhale fully as you roll your head to the other side. Repeat this a few times, and then change directions.

Another good exercise for the eyes you can do starts with you closing your eyes, and then you massage them with circular movements of your fingers for 2 minutes. Make sure that you are pressing very lightly on your eyes while doing this, and this is important because otherwise you could end up hurting your eyes.

Natural Eye Care Products
