Not Like the Others: HIV, breast cancer, diabetes?and fertility ...

You know that old Sesame Street song: ?One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn?t belong.?

Example: Blue sunglasses, green sunglasses, red sunglasses, and a beanie.?Can you tell me?which thing is not like the others?? ?It?s the beanie!

One more.? Can you tell me which of these things is not like the others?? This time it is not Big Bird who presents the puzzle, but the President of the United States.

Here: look at the list of preventive services covered with no cost sharing under the Affordable Care Act.

Among the conditions targeted are alcoholism, depression, HIV, syphilis, diabetes, breast cancer, and fertility.? Which of these things just doesn?t belong?

Some women who object to contraception do so claiming that their fertility is not a disease to be cured.? In the past, this seemed to me to be an assertion of a certain sort.? It seemed to me that it did not function to oppose directly a view that other people explicitly held, but rather it functioned to support the idea that fertility is natural and healthy and should be treated with respect.

But I rethink this when I see that the law places fertility in the same category as alcoholism and depression.? This is quite close to an explicit statement that fertility is, in fact, a disease to be cured.

Healthcare.gov says, ?Under the Affordable Care Act, you and your family may be eligible for some important preventive services ? which can help you avoid illness and improve your health ? at no additional cost to you.?

So, preventive services ?help you avoid illness and improve your health.?? They classify contraception as a preventive service.? What ?illness? does contraception help people avoid?? Fertility.

Here is another such statement: Section 4104 of the Affordable Care Act ?indicates that the law uses the definition of ?preventive services? from the Social Security Act , and following this definition, contraception apparently falls under the category of ?additional preventive services.?? One of the criteria for qualifying for this category is that the service must be ?reasonable and necessary for the prevention or early detection of an illness or disability.?? Which is fertility?an illness or a disability?

What denigration of motherhood!? What insensitivity to the sorrowful aspiring mothers who cannot conceive!? It has been codified.

Breast cancer, syphilis, depression, and fertility: one of these things is not like the others.

One of these things just doesn?t belong.
