High gloss paints like oil or latex based enamels are a great way to draw attention to the structural elements of a home. Furniture in a high gloss paint finish is perfect for a key design element in contemporary-style decor. High gloss paint adds a shiny, lacquer-like finish that reflects light and creates an eye-catching modern look. Here is a tutorial to give your modern outdoor furniture or dining room furniture a durable, lustrous finish.
For super-shiny results, you will need: sandpaper, wood glue, wood putty, acrylic sealer spray, white polyurethane primer, polyurethane semi-gloss spray paint in a color of your choice and clear polyurethane high gloss finish.
Sand and Buff the Pieces Sand down your modern outdoor furniture or dining room furniture to remove all of the old paint, glazes or any other surface treatments and have a smooth, clean surface to start with. Using a clean, dry cloth buff the wood to remove all traces of wood dust.
Fill in the Cracks If you need to stabilize any joints or fill in any cracks, use wood glue or wood putty to complete any repair work before painting. Allow the wood glue/putty to dry and again, sand and buff as before.
Spray Sealer Seal your modern outdoor furniture or dining room furniture by spraying the pieces with a light coat of acrylic sealer. Let the pieces dry and go over them once more with another coat of sealer. Set them aside to dry completely again and give the pieces a third coat. After the sealer has dried completely, sand the furniture again.
Prime the Furniture Go over the sanded furniture with a coat of white polyurethane primer. Coat the furniture thoroughly and let dry. After the primer has dried, lightly sand once more.
High Gloss Paint Spray on high gloss paint to cover the entire surface of the furniture. Use a smooth back and forth motion for optimum coverage and make sure to use a nozzle to evenly get paint into the corners. After the first coat has dried completely, sand lightly and reapply a layer of high gloss paint. Sand lightly after the furniture is completely dry.
Add the High Gloss Paint For the last layer, spray the clear high gloss finish to prevent brush strokes and streaks from showing-up in the furniture.
Build up the paint layers slowly, as outlined in this simple tutorial, to achieve a smooth and glossy look for your furniture.
