The Philadelphia Zoo is home to more than 1300 animals, including more than 300 different species and subspecies.?The 42-acre campus is filled with a variety of animal habitats designed to provide an up close and personal experience.?You can?get?within inches of a lion,?face to face with a gorilla, and?nose to nose with?giant river otters! It?s an amazing asset to our region.
I love the zoo. And my family membership. We roll in, parking fees covered with a wave of our card, pop out the double stroller and coast through the gates past lines of families waiting for tickets. It?s like EZPass, and now that I?ve had it I?m likely to be a member for life. And this spring it?s going to be even BETTER!
Okay, first let?s talk about the parking!?A new state-of-the-art garage , dubbed the ?Centennial District Intermodal Transportation Center,? is scheduled to be wrapped up by the time the new Children?s Zoo opens. Oh my! Did you say a NEW Children?s Zoo? The goats, sheep, ducks, and bunnies are an essential part of our trips! Oh, yes I did. It?s KidZooU time!
Over the last decade, the zoo has opened three major exhibits ? PECO Primate Reserve, Big Cat Falls, and the McNeil Avian Center. Each of these award-winning exhibits has broken new ground ? combining a compelling animal experience with engaging messages about species and habitat preservation and conservation.
And now, the Philadelphia Zoo is building a redefined world-class children?s zoo that takes this philosophy to a new level ? providing a joyful, engaging experience for children and families while promoting a lifetime of conservation action through hands-on learning activities.
- KidZooU will be a year-round destination ? abundant indoor and outdoor features make it less weather-dependent and will appeal to children ages two to thirteen.
- The Zoo?s current children?s zoo animals?- goats, sheep, ducks and backyard bugs?- will be joined by colorful butterflies, budgies and tropical fish, all connecting a conservation message.
- Rare breed goats, sheep and chickens will delight visitors with their unique appearances and convey the importance of species diversity.
- The building will be LEED-certified and include a number of ?green? features ? green roofs, rainwater harvesting cisterns, and geothermal heating and cooling.
- Children will be engaged in animal care:?grooming, feeding and learning how to improve animals? lives.
- The Zoo?s new dynamic design ? overhead animal trails ? will connect exhibits and allow animals to move throughout the Zoo, creating a constantly-changing experience for the animals ? and guests!
- All of the Zoo?s educational programming ? and its teaching collection?- will be housed in one space to support more comprehensive programs.
