A recent poll shows that the fever over the next Apple smartphone has not subsided, as the "Most Anticipated Tech Product of 2012" goes to none other than the iPhone 5.
SodaHead.com, a site that specializes in online polls, asked the question last week and among 755 voters, 35 percent said they wanted the next iPhone. Apple also made it to second in voters' hearts with the next iteration of the iPad, which commanded 20 percent of respondents. Rumors of a Google tablet were enough to propel that item to No. 3 with 16 percent of the vote. In a surprise, given that Kindle Fires have reportedly topped unit sales of a million a week?in December, the next version of it only attracted 7 percent anticipation. Gamers responded with 12 percent lusting over the PlayStation Vita and 11 percent eagerly awaiting the Wii U.
We're not surprised about the continuing fascination with the next iPhone. There was an anti-climatic moment when the iPhone 4S came out, as fanboys and girls?? and let's face, a lot more people?? expressed disappointment over the lack of a dramatically different device. But, the iPhone 4S, thanks in large part to Siri, still managed to capture hearts and minds, with 4 million landing in consumers' pockets and purses its first weekend of release. And, it continued to gain momentum?and top holiday wish lists.?
What's interesting is the total lack of Android handsets in the top five of this poll, even though it commands 47 percent of the U.S. smartphone market share. As much as people seem to snap them up, no one handset seems to generate the same kind of buzz that the iPhone does. Sure, Samsung's Galaxy Nexus definitely had some of that magic "It" factor working for a while, but there are just so many Android devices out there with various devotees that it keeps any one handset from carrying the same kind of obsessive longing that seems to characterize iPhone fever.
