The battle of the bulge among West Virginia children isn?t going to be won until society is weaned off fast, processed foods and physical activity is revived.
So concluded three southern lawmakers Wednesday, after the Standing Committee on Education adopted a startling report on obese children in our state.
In her findings a day earlier to a legislative panel, Dr. Eloise Elliott, a West Virginia University professor, found that 27.5 percent of West Virginia children are considered obese, contrasted to a national average of 17 percent.
Her study revealed that a staggering 47.1 percent of 5th graders are deemed to be either overweight or obese.
Delegates Dave Perry, D-Fayette, Linda Sumner, R-Raleigh, and Rick Moye, D-Raleigh, say the weighty matter is attributable to ?a societal issue.?
?That means we all have to share in the responsibility for it,? Perry said.
A major problem is that the education system has decreased its emphasis on physical education, said Perry, a retired principal of Collins Middle School in Oak Hill.
One fault lies in abandoning the old system in which men taught boys and women instructed girls in physical education, he said.
