College Football: State's getting a good look

San Marcos ? There are few programs in the nation that have the luxury of truly prearing to face Navy?s triple-option offense. After all, there aren?t many programs left that take a similar approach to moving the ball.

Texas State, however, is different.

While other programs went into their games blind with the Midshipmen, the Bobcats have a pair of trump cards in senior running back Marcus Curry and freshman quarterback Jordan Moore. Curry transferred to Texas State from Navy in 2010 and Moore, who spent one season at the Naval Prep Academy before joining the Bobcats, ran an option offense in high school.

?It?s really big for us to have guys that have been through it before,? Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione said. ?To have an understanding of the offense you?re working against and the right things to happen against the fronts you?re going to play is critical.?

While Curry is three years removed from a standout freshman season as the Midshipmen?s slotback (872 total yards and eight touchdowns), Navy?s game plan is all-but engrained in Moore?s being.

?We come out here running the Navy offense that I ran at the prep and in high school, so I?m pretty much used to it,? said Moore, who rushed for 732 yards and 11 touchdowns at Aldine High (Houston). ?If you have someone who isn?t used to running the option, things are going to be kind of slow. I?m already ahead of the game. I just come out here giving them the best look I can.?

Franchione and his coaching not only recruited Moore for his knack for running an option-based offense, which the Bobcats primarily do out of the pistol, but his dual-threat capability.

Thanks to his ability to run and throw, Moore also gives Texas State?s defense ? and defensive coordinator Craig Naivar ? a great replica of what it?ll face Saturday afternoon inside Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen feature true freshman quarterback Kennan Reynolds, who is the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the program since Jim Kubiak in 1991.

?His athleticism is just tremendous, just like Reynolds?,? Naivar said of Moore. ?He?s done a good job of getting to the perimeter and making our guys get a stop.?

If Moore continues to give the Bobcats? defense a good look, they?ll be able to do something not many have been able to do against Navy, which is slow its offense down. The Midshipmen average 274.3 rushing yards per game, which puts them sixth in the nation.
