The demand for SUVs like Hummer as well as the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 are dropping as fuel prices and concerns about eco-image rise.
Not big news here in the U.S. But demand has fallen overseas as well.
Demand for these vehicles in Europe seemed to be at their highest in the 1990s due to such celebrities as Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron driving the Hummer. The Range Rover Sport was favored by the so-called "jet set" who had the money to pay out for high parking fees, taxes, and fuel. As popularity for the SUV increased in Europe, they took on the nicknames of ?Chelsea tractors? or ?Yank tanks.? Soon they raised the ire of environmentally concerned people who left nasty notes on their windshield. More and more politicians all of a sudden voiced their dislike for the vehicles too. Still, manufacturers like Mercedes, Toyota, BMW, Audi, and Porsche saw the profit potential and continued to manufacture them. Then came the gas crisis. Now sales of SUVs in Europe are plummeting. And back here in the U.S., Schwarzenegger, the poster boy for the Hummer,? calling on the state?s citizens to drive more economical cars. In the meantime, he has converted his Hummers to run on hydrogen and biofuels.
