Just two days from the kick off of the inaugural 'Obliteride' to raise money for cancer research, and organizers say participation is good, but more funds are needed to reach the goal of $2 million. Organizers say 100 percent of the money goes to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Executive Director Amy Lavin says fundraising is just over $1 million, but expected to grow through the October 1st deadline.
More than 700 riders are signed up for the event which kicks off Friday night at Gasworks Park with a series of bike rides beginning Saturday.
For many riders, the event is exactly what the doctor ordered. Kevin Wood is battling an incurable form of lung cancer and is riding in his first organized bike ride, because he wants to see research find a cure.?????????
"I think someone in my position grasps onto whatever brave hope there is. And I think now there is some pretty good hope," he said. "Someone soon will be able to use this."
