One step closer to rollable, foldable e-Devices

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The next generation of electronic displays -- e-Readers, smartphones and tablets -- is closer thanks to research out October 31 from the University of Cincinnati.

Advances that will eventually bring foldable/rollable e-devices as well as no pixel borders are experimentally verified and proven to work in concept at UC's Novel Devices Laboratory. That research is published this week in the journal Nature Communications.

The UC paper, "Bright e-Paper by Transport of Ink through a White Electrofluidic Imaging Film," is authored by College of Engineering and Applied Science doctoral students Matthew Hagedon, Shu Yang, and Ann Russell, as well as Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems. UC worked on this research with partner: start-up company Gamma Dynamics.

Foldable e-Devices Closer Thanks to Electrofluidic Imaging Film

One challenge in creating foldable e-Paper devices has been the device screen, which is currently made of rigid glass. But what if the screen were a paper-thin plastic that rolled like a window shade? You'd have a device like an iPad that could be folded or rolled up repeatedly -- even tens of thousands of time. Just roll it up and stick it in your pocket.

The UC research out today experimentally verifies that such a screen of paper-thin plastic, what the researchers refer to as "electrofluidic imaging film," works. The breakthrough is a white, porous film coated with a thin layer of reflective electrodes and spacers that are then subjected to unique and sophisticated fluid mechanics in order to electrically transport the colored ink and clear-oil fluids that comprise the consumer content (text, images, video) of electronic devices.

According to UC's Hagedon, "This is the first of any type of electrowetting display that can be made as a simple film that you laminate onto a sheet of controlling electronics. Manufacturers prefer this approach compared to having to build up the pixels themselves within their devices, layer by layer, material by material. Our proof-of-concept breakthrough takes us one step closer to brighter, color-video e-Paper and the Holy Grail of rollable/foldable displays."

No Pixel Borders

Importantly, this paper-thin plastic screen developed at UC is the first among all types of fluidic displays that has no pixel borders.

In current technology, colors maintain their image-forming distinctiveness by means of what are known as "pixel borders." Each individual pixel that helps to comprise the image necessary for text, photographs, video and other content maintains its distinct color and does not bleed over into the next pixel or color due to a pixel border. In other words, each individual pixel of color has a border around it (invisible to the eye of the consumer) to maintain its color distinctiveness.

This matters because pixel borders are basically "dead areas" that dull any display of information, whether a display of text or image. Leading electronics companies have been seeking ways to reduce or eliminate pixel borders in order to increase display brightness.

Said UC's Heikenfeld, "For example, the pixel border in current electrowetting displays, which prevents ink merging, takes up a sizable portion of the pixel. This is now resolved with our electrofluidic film breakthrough. Furthermore, our breakthrough provides extraordinary capability to hide the ink when you don't want to see it, which further cranks up the available brightness and color of the display when you do want to see it. With a single, new technology, we have simplified manufacturability AND improved screen brightness."

Foldable e-Devices as Environmental Electronics

Expect that the first-generation foldable e-devices will be monochrome. Color will come later. Eventually, within 10 to 20 years, e-Devices with magazine-quality color, viewable in bright sunlight but requiring low power will come to market. "Think of this as the green iPad or e-Reader, combining high function and high color without the weight of a heavy battery, readable out in the sunlight, and foldable into your pocket," said Heikenfeld.

The device will require low power to operate since it will charge via sunlight and ambient room light. However, it will be so "tough" and only use wireless connection ports, such that you can leave it out over night in the rain. In fact, you'll be able to wash it or drop it without damaging the thin, highly flexible casing and screen.

This latest proof of concept research verifying the functionality of electrofluidic imaging film builds on previous research out of UC's Novel Devices Laboratory. That previous research broke down a significant barrier to bright electronic displays that don't require a heavy battery to power them.

Currently, faster, color-saturated, high-power devices like a computer's liquid-cystal display screen, an iPad or a cell phone require high power (and, consequently, a larger battery), in part, because they need a strong internal light source within the device (that "backlights" the screen) as well as color filters in order to display the pixels as color/moving images. The need for an internal light source within the device also means visibility is poor in bright sunlight.

The new electrofluidic imaging film is part of an overall UC design that will require only low-power to produce high speed content and function because it makes use of ambient light vs. a strong, internal light source within the device.

TransCanada's profit falls after plant outages

(Reuters) - TransCanada Corp , operator of the 590,000-barrel-per day Keystone pipeline from Canada to the United States, reported a 4 percent drop in quarterly profit due to power plant outages and lower revenue from its Canadian Mainline pipeline.

Net income fell to C$369 million, or 52 Canadian cents per share, in the third quarter, from C$384 million, or 55 Canadian cents per share, a year earlier.

Comparable earnings, which exclude most one-time items, fell 16 percent to C$349 million, or 50 Canadian cents per share.

Revenue fell 4 percent to C$2.13 billion.

Revenue for Canadian Mainline, a 14,101 km natural gas pipeline, fell 6 percent to C$247 million in the quarter.

Canada's largest pipeline company said it expects to complete projects worth C$13 billion, including Keystone XL and the Gulf Coast project, within the next three years.

The company plans to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to carry oil sands crude to U.S. Gulf coast refineries.

TransCanada on Monday said it will build a C$3 billion pipeline in northern Alberta in partnership with Phoenix Energy to transport crude from the Athabasca oilsands.

iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5: Camera shootout

iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5: Camera shootout

Apple has released a new iPod touch and this time it actually has a decent camera on it. But is it half-way decent or all-the-way decent? If you go iPod touch instead of iPhone 5, and the camera matters to you, how much are you missing out? That's what we're aiming to find out by putting both to the test. It's iPhone 5 vs. iPod touch 5 in an iOS camera shoot-out, iMore style!

Photo size: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

Before we start comparing similar photos side-by-side, it's important to note that since the iPhone 5 has an 8-megapixel camera and the iPod touch 5 has a 5-megapixel camera, the full-resolution dimensions of the iPod touch 5's photos are smaller than the iPhone 5's photos. To be exact, the iPod touch 5 produces 1936x2592 images and the iPhone 5 produces 2448x3264 images. The photos above show how these two resolutions compare proportionally.

In terms of print sizes, if you print at 200 ppi, photos from the iPod touch can print up to 9"x12" and photos from the iPhone 5 can print up to 12"x16". At 300 ppi, the iPod touch produces prints up to 6"x8" images and iPhone 5 photos print up to 8"x10".

For the remainder of this review, the images from both devices have been scaled down to appear to be the same size. The photos on the left were taken with an iPod touch 5 and the photos on the right were taken with an iPhone 5.

General photography: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

In general, the iPod touch 5's camera takes very nice photos even when compared next to iPhone 5 photos -- but it's still clear that the iPhone 5 photos are better. The noticeable differences are that the iPhone 5's images are more vibrant, have more contrast, and are a little warmer. Overall, the iPod touch 5 photos just look a little flat when compared with the iPhone 5's versions. I always prefer the iPhone 5's photo over the iPod touch 5 when shooting with the rear-facing iSight cameras.

Macro photography: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

Both camera's performed well at macro, specifically with their ability to focus. The iPod touch 5 and iPhone 5 both do a better job at focussing on close subjects than the iPhone 4S.

Again, the images from the iPhone 5 have more contrast and a warmer tone.

Low-light photography: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

The quality of the sensor on the iPhone 5 is very obviously better than the iPod touch 5 when comparing photos taken in low-light. You can also see that the colors are much more accurate in low-light than on the iPod touch. In the above images, the first image has an unflattering green tint and is also much darker.

Low-light, indoor environments are almost equally bad on both devices as shown in the photos below.

Front-facing cameras: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

Both the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 are equipped with the same front-facing 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, so I was rather surprised to discover that the iPod touch 5 takes warmer photos than the iPhone 5. It's possible that there another variable like angle between me and the sun or the camera and the sun that is causing these results, but I took several images with both cameras at this time and all produced similar results: the iPod touch 5's photos are warmer than the iPhone 5's photo (from the FaceTime camera).

Panoramic photography: iPod touch 5 vs iPhone 5

As with other images, the iPod touch 5 and iPhone 5 cameras produce similar panoramic photos except that the iPhone 5's version has more contrast and a slightly warmer tone.

The bottom line

There's no denying that the iPhone 5's camera is better than the iPod touch 5. The images are more vibrant, have more contrast, and have better color. Are the differences huge? No. In fact, in most cases, I can edit a photo taken with an iPod touch to look just like it's iPhone 5 counterpart with very little effort. Where the iPhone 5 really excels is at low-light photography and of course the resolution of the images. Overall, I was still impressed with the quality of the camera on the iPod touch considering it's housed in such an incredibly thin device.

Emergency Storm Apps & Checklists for Food & Other Supplies (Part ...

There have been many kinds of storms including hurricanes, tornadoes, nor?easters & more over the years & such storm activity will continue in the future. One can?t stress enough how important it is to have an emergency plan of preparedness that includes a checklist for supplies & be ready at a moment?s notice to actually implement any such plan.

Dietitians who operate feeding centers have to be prepared to serve thousands of meals, even if there is no power available and limited water supplies.

We have personally experienced 11 days without power after a microburst storm hit our area back in 1998 around Labor Day that year. Farther north of us earlier that same year many people experienced microburst storm activity to a much greater extent with freezing rain/ice. ?Just two years prior that area had experienced similar microburst winter ice storm activity and been without power for at least 17 days (and in many instances for several weeks) during the height of freezing cold winter.

Many people have experienced much worse storm damage and much longer periods without power, so know that being prepared really is essential.

(Image of potential disasters striking from 1993 Federal Emergency Management Agency aka FEMA materials developed in conjunction with the American Red Cross)

Disaster preparedness includes much more than just having adequate water and food supplies.

This two-part blog series is a compilation of some advisements put out by various emergency preparedness agencies and other sources to encourage readers to implement any emergency planning should you be in the path of any storm system at any given time.

As this blog post was being finalized, advisements concerning Hurricane Sandy had been circulating for days, so hopefully you have taken all of the advance warnings about this major storm seriously, since in some areas it may present as a combination of a hurricane or tropical storm + a nor?easter. It has not only progressed as a hurricane which traveled through the Caribbean, but experts have expected it to pick up some winter storm system activity to boot as it turns Westward on the East Coast.

Pointers raised for this storm event will echo emergency management checklist pointers for all kinds of storm events, so feel free to bookmark this post for future reference.

In this Part 1 of 2 we?ll mention some sites to check for emergency preparedness information, including for downloading apps to a smart phone, and some water and food considerations in advance of any emergency storm situation. ?In Part 2 of 2, we?ll mention clothing considerations, paperwork pointers including having handy paper versions of emergency contact info for your own family and then for local services, other equipment and supplies to have handy for the various human family members, and even?supplies to have handy for any pets.

There are MANY versions of emergency preparedness checklists available from a wide range of sources, including:

?

You can go to the sites listed above or a local site and download an emergency checklist from there and if you have not already done so, we urge you to do so now and keep it waterproof in a readily accessible spot.

We will highlight some of the key suggestions found at those and other sites and mention some of our own takes on the subject hoping you might find such infotainment useful.

NOTE: You should ALWAYS follow advice from emergency management service(s) in your area and we urge you to be aware of that information and to make sure you follow any and all emergency advisements provided by any emergency management service(s) in your area, including advisements to evacuate your location heading for safer ground when told to do so. Don?t wait to take such advisements to heart?please take such advisements seriously when they are given and don?t delay in getting to a safer location while it is still safe to travel. Delaying following such advisements could place you and your loved ones in harm?s way, so follow advisements promptly.

ABC News kindly posted hotlinks to some smart phone apps as we were finishing up this blog entry on Oct 28th, so full credit to them for sharing that information on their website.

Some of the apps mentioned include:

  • FEMA has an App for either Apple?s iPhone (version 1.1.0) or Android phones (version 1.1.0), including details concerning?app use.?The FEMA app reportedly ?contains preparedness information for different types of disasters, an interactive checklist for emergency kits, a section to plan emergency meeting locations, information on how to stay safe and recover after a disaster, a map with FEMA Disaster Recovery Center locations (one-stop centers where disaster survivors can access key relief services) and Shelters, general ways the public can get involved before and after a disaster, and the FEMA blog.?
  • American Red Cross Emergency Phone App for either iPhone (version 1.3.1) or Android (version 1.3.2) smart phones.?The American Red Cross Emergency Phone App reportedly includes access to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) hurricane-related weather condition alerts for the US and its territories; a Hurricane Toolkit from the American Red Cross for your smart phone with a strobe light, flashlight, and audible alert functions; information on emergency kit assembly; listing of open Red Cross shelters in your area; step-by-step instructions for what to do before/during/after a storm; reminders with caveats concerning handling food and drinking water should your area be impacted by floods and/or power outages.
  • National Weather Service National Hurricane Center at NOAA?(where you can track updated storm information if you still have power) and
  • The Weather Channel App for smart phones including Apple?s iPhone (version 5.1.0) and also for Android phones (version 3.8.3).

Suggestions To Consider in Your Emergency Storm Preparations

NOTE: The following is for infotainment purposes only and is NOT meant to be all inclusive and is NOT meant to replace information available in your own unique location. You are URGED to make yourself aware of information available in your own locale from emergency management services there as they are most familiar with the location where you live and how you should prepare for any emergency in your area.

Water Supplies:

Figure a minimum of 3-6 days or longer of potable water supplies depending upon recommendations for your area:

  • 1 gallon total/person/day (1/2 gallon of potable water to drink and possibly more for any breast feeding moms and 1/2 gallon of potable water for other needs); allow for extra potable water for food preparation using pots and a camp stove as needed. (Image of water bottle courtesy of?nazreth at?rgbstock.com)

Non-potable water supplies depending upon recommendations for your area:

  • If at home, fill the bathtub with water that be scooped up in a bucket to allow for toilet flushing

Food Equipment & Supplies:

Figure a minimum of 3-6 days or longer of shelf-stable food supplies, depending upon recommendations for your area.

Assemble a wide range of shelf stable food items from various food group categories appropriate to cover the needs of various persons in your family. Don?t forget to include baby and toddler items for the littlest ones as well (even if you normally make your own baby food, unless for some reason you already did some canning ahead of homemade baby food). Having one of those non-electric small chopper jars can come in handy for cutting up room temperature stable veggies when light levels are low as they are safer to use to avoid hand injuries in low lighting situations without power.

Keep handy a manual safety-type can opener (that is actually a can lid uncrimper) as noted on our Pinterest site under Kitchen Gadget Favorites (the type of can opener that unseals cans, rather than cutting them is always best to use, especially in a storm crisis when the last thing anyone needs is a can lid cut, ?but a can opener that cuts cans could be used if there is no other option) for whoever will be opening canned food supplies as needed. Uncrimping style safety can openers really are much safer to use under low lighting conditions.

Think about the supplies you might bring camping (expecting to have NO access to refrigeration) to serve yourself and your family/friends for several or more days. Assemble containers that once opened are likely to be used up during a single dining session UNLESS the food product is totally stable at room temperature. An exception to this would be if for some reason you have access to a generator that can maintain safe food storage temperatures for perishable food items in a refrigerator and/or freezer.

Consider including items mentioned in a simple emergency food and recipe?guide?renamed the Healthy Disaster Cookbook originally prepared by dietetic students at Florida International University, although realistically skip any ingredients that require any refrigeration UNLESS you have access to a generator to maintain safe food temperatures for such perishables. Perishable food items have rapid bacterial growth after a mere hour at high room temps and a couple of hours at lower room ?temps.

Unless you have a protected area with adequate ventilation (but not aggressive wind) for camp stove cooking, plan for most dining times to feature room temperature offerings only.

There can potentially be a time and place for disposables and this may well be considered one of those times,?so if you have disposable picnic supplies of cups, plates, bowls, utensils, napkins, paper towels, plastic gloves, plastic garbage & other plastic bags, etc., you might want to have those handy and available for use as needed; also sanitizing surface wipes might come in handy at times like these.

Consider any food allergies and/or intolerances of whoever will be grouped together where you are staying, then gather up from the pantry/cupboard/closets/cabinets & clean off the tops ahead of time of various shelf stable:

  • already cooked cans and jars of beans (kidney, black, navy, white, pigeon, cannelloni,?chick peas/garbanzo beans, and if you will have a camp stove,?baked beans);
  • canned poultry and fish (including chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, shrimp, crabmeat, sardines, mackerel and possibly even clams); canned fruits and canned vegetables.
  • Also assemble ?nut? butters such as peanut, almond or cashew; dried fruits such as apricots, prunes, raisins, and possibly also fruit leathers;
  • ready-to eat ?nuts? such as almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, peanuts, pecans, ?soynuts? and walnuts;
  • various edible seeds;
  • washed ahead room temperature whole fruits that may last a few days;
  • washed ahead room temperature whole vegetables that may last a few days;
  • individual condiment packs to flavor hot items if you will be able to use a camp stove;
  • various breads and crackers;
  • individual water bottles and/or
  • juice or juice/vegetable mix brik pack boxes since single portion brik pack juice containers can be desirable since anything not consumed can be immediately discarded; single serving bowl, no refrigeration needed foil pack sealed applesauce and similar pureed or canned fruit containers can also be desirable for the same reason
  • Powdered as well as brik pack shelf stable milk (including soy and/or nut milk) options might also be considered.

Additionally keep these suggestions in mind:

  • Instant oatmeal will soften at room temperature in a short time of minutes if liquid is added and combined with small pieces of soft pack dried fruit and some nut pieces will remind one of muesli served often in Switzerland and throughout Europe for breakfast.
  • Portioning snack food items into waterproof plastic bags in advance would be wise. Think about whatever you and your family like to take on outings such as hikes and portion out some ?trail mix? for example.
  • Keep handy breakfast, granola or energy bars as they are ready-to-eat at any time
  • Some healthy individuals find products similar to an all-in-one breakfast beverage such as Carnation Instant Breakfast (ready-to-drink containers may sometimes work well, or in other instances adding dry powdered milk to potable water and adding a dry packet of the breakfast mix may work out satisfactorily if you have shaker bottles or a battery operated hand stick blender for this purpose).
  • Some nutrient supplements may be appropriate for healthy persons during times of a storm disaster since obviously it is especially challenging to eat a balanced diet during that time period. Consuming nutrient supplements up to the level suggested by the National Academy of Sciences through their?National Academy Press (NAP) website?is often considered by many health authorities to be prudent for healthy Americans, however, be sure to follow specific advice relevant to your personal health from your medical practitioner?s office before ever consuming any Over-the Counter (OTC) nutrient or other dietary supplements. Your health care practitioner should be aware of your total health status, medications, etc. and thus best able to address your questions and concerns as you manage your own personal health status and ditto for your family members. Especially during a storm crisis you want to avoid any negative interactions that could be caused by casually consuming certain OTC nutrient or dietary supplements along with any required medication.
  • If needed, sufficient infant formula (preferably ready-to-feed) realizing it will be difficult or in some instances impossible to sterilize anything during the storm emergency time, so plan accordingly?for enough extra bottles and nipples.

In Part 2 of 2 we?ll continue with important paper copies of items to have handy and other supplies to have grouped together and within easy access during the emergency period.

Why advertisers choose adsense? | Asvins tech Blog

Browsing the internet from a long time, you have already become aware of the fact that google search engine is the number one search engine on the internet.Out of all the searches made by the visitors, google search engine being the most used search engine constitute around 42% of the total searches in the world. And that is one of the reasons advertisers pay for PPC (Pay per click).Although the meaning of PPC is very simple but let me tell you once again, PPC is a type of campaign in which advertisers pay a fixed amount of price for a particular click. Some advertisers pay more for a specific competitive keyword as they want to make more visible in the adverts than there competitors. This feature of PPC campaign has lead to over 150k companies to join with this program of google that is adverts for advertisers and adsense for publishers.
Advertisers can choose a number of ways to advertise there business.

The first one is the basic advertising in the search engines at the right side and below the searched keyword of the search engine that is http://www.google.com
The second one advertising on other sites automatically via google adsense for publishers.
And the third and last one is at other websites search results.Same method is applied as first way described above.
Another reason why advertisers select adsense is because they gain more exposure and credibility of there business from google adsense. As you know Google adsense can also be integrated easily with articles, so advertisers are showing more interest in advertising there product related to thhat product article. Through this feature they have came to the fact that the articles are resulting in more sales of there product. So it is also a part why advertisers select adsense.

// ]]>
Another reason for advertisers choosing adsense is trust.Google is been in the internet world from almost equal minimum to a decade. So advertisers trust are increaseing more and more as adverts program is growing.Since they trust google, they also believe that whatever google will do,it will be fair.In many cases the pricing of avertisements is set by google according to market and due to this trust advertisers never feel that they are being overpricing by the google. Also google adsense is one of the best advertisers in detecting fraudulent and suspicious activities like force/false click through same pc using multiple IP?s address. So it is also considered in why adsense is best choice for advertisers.

Sandy Grounds Thousands of Flights but Analysts ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook

Thousands of airline flights to and from the east coast of the United States have been grounded as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which threatens to be one of the worst ever to hit the East Coast.

JetBlue Airways, which has a major hub at Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, has canceled more than 1,000 flights from Sunday through Wednesday, and United Airlines, with a major hub in Newark, New Jersey, has grounded 3,700 flights, or about 16% of those scheduled, during that same period.

American Airlines and its commuter line American Eagle have canceled over 1,500 flights from Sunday night until midday Wednesday and says there may be additional delays and cancellations depending on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Customers whose flights were canceled but bought their tickets before October 27 won't be charged extra if they reschedule to travel no later than Nov. 7.

Delta and all other airlines with flights scheduled to depart or leave airports along the East Coast have also canceled flights.

Analysts don't expect the storm to have a lasting impact on airlines, however, fourth quarter earnings could feel a pinch.

"We do not expect the storm to have a sustained impact on earnings, through there is likely to be a shortfall from current 4Q12 estimates," Raymond Kames analyst Savanthi Syth writes in her report today.

"The airlines are well prepared?.They've moved their assets out of harm's way," says Ray Neidl, senior equity analyst at Maxim Group.

Neidl says those moves, flying planes to airports out of the storm's path, will be the biggest storm-induced cost for the airlines.

Additionally, losses could be limited due to the fact that the storm is coming at a "soft time" in the season.

Mateo Lleras, manager of corporate communications at JetBlue, says the airline is not yet in a position to discuss the financial impact of the storm but tells The Daily Ticker "it's worth noting that while planes don't make money on the ground, they don't cost money, either?we save on fuel and other operating costs."

If customers want to change or cancel flights, JetBlue is waving fees for travel to and from cities in the mid-Atlantic and northwest that are impacted by the storm.

According to Syth, JetBlue is among the airlines most affected by the storm, followed by United, Delta, US Airways and American. She estimates the storm could cost JetBlue $25 million pre-tax. More than 80% of its flights are along the East Coast Corridor from Washington, D.C. to Rhode Island?compared to about 48% for US Airways and between 22-28% for other major airlines. She estimates Delta will lose $45 million pre-tax.

Overall Syth says the airline industry is now much better prepared to weather big storms because they're "very disciplined about managing capacity?.They're not going after market share for the sake of market share, but add only flights that make economic sense."

The full impact of Hurricane Sandy on the airlines won't be known for days.

"If the worst of the storm is by Tuesday and things start to recover Wednesday, then planes could be operational by the weekend," says Neidl.

Stay tuned.

MONEY? News ? Online Jobs Expected to Increase in 2013 ...

St. Louis, Missouri (PRWEB) October 27, 2012

Online jobs are one way of earning income for some displaced workers or stay-at-home moms. While telecommuting was popular in the 1990s, the expansion of the Internet has opened new doors to employment. A new study reviewed by the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website has revealed that online jobs are expected to increase in 2013 to higher than expected levels. Part of this expansion is attributed to the number of job layoffs that are causing more entrepreneurs to create online companies. The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website is offering access to job and business training entirely online. This training can be accessed here at this link online.

A recent October story published in the Star Tribune brought to life the increasing numbers of adults that are preparing to work online or find accessible employment online. These trends are growing in many U.S. states as the job markets are flooding with recent graduates that already have computer and social media job skills.

Entrepreneurs in the U.S. have grown steadily due in part to the opportunities that are now available online. Part of the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website information includes training men and women with Internet marketing business skills. These skills can be used to begin working online and are offered as an alternative to the standard 9 to 5 employment.

Government agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the USA has taken interest in the rise in online workers. New positions like social media manager and freelance writer have been added or updated in the published data to make public the growth of these workers online.

For those that are able to work online, the multitude of opportunities available is almost endless. The Internet marketing training offered through the Creating Jobs for America website is an example of one way that some are using to work for themselves online.

Some bloggers are earning upwards of six figures a year according to published data. While some bloggers write for corporate companies, many have learned the skills required to setup large and small blogs that can be monetized online. Part of the core training as an Internet marketer includes blogging and affiliate marketing income programs.

The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website locates the best training and now offers this training to workers that want to leave the offline working world behind.

The training programs reviewed and offered by the Creating Jobs for America website all have refundable access fees. These refunds are put in place to help those that complete the training to earn money instantly instead of taking a loss on training that turns out ineffective. A 60-day refund is offered as an incentive to help online workers or entrepreneurs start earning money without the fears of losing training fees to learn new skills.

About Creating Jobs for America

'Frankenstorm': Worse than sum of its parts

From the lowest lying areas of the Jersey shore, where residents were already being encouraged to leave, to the state's northern highlands, where sandbags were being filled and cars moved into parking lots on high ground, New Jersey began preparing in earnest for Hurricane Sandy. Map shows predicted rain across the northeast

A satellite image of Sandy is shown at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Early Saturday, the storm was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C. Tropical storm warnings were issued for parts of Florida's East Coast, along with parts of coastal North and South Carolina and the Bahamas. Tropical storm watches were issued for coastal Georgia and parts of South Carolina, along with parts of Florida and Bermuda. Sandy is projected to hit the Atlantic Coast early Tuesday. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz)

(AP) ? The storm that is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the nation in just a couple of days with high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, flooding and probably snow is much more than just an ordinary weather system. It's a freakish and unprecedented monster.

How did it get that way?

Start with Sandy, an ordinary late summer hurricane from the tropics, moving north up the East Coast. Bring in a high pressure ridge of air centered around Greenland that blocks the hurricane's normal out-to-sea path and steers it west toward land.

Add a wintry cold front moving in from the west that helps pull Sandy inland and mix in a blast of Arctic air from the north for one big collision. Add a full moon and its usual effect, driving high tides. Factor in immense waves commonly thrashed up by a huge hurricane plus massive gale-force winds.

Do all that and you get a stitched-together weather monster expected to unleash its power over 800 square miles, with predictions in some areas of 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow and sustained 40- to 50 mph winds.

"The total is greater than the sum of the individual parts" said Louis Uccellini, the environmental prediction chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists. "That is exactly what's going on here."

This storm is so dangerous and so unusual because it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both ? part hurricane, part nor'easter, all trouble," Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground, said Saturday.

With Sandy expected to lose tropical characteristics, NOAA is putting up high wind watches and warnings that aren't hurricane or tropical for coastal areas north of North Carolina, causing some television meteorologists to complain that it is all too confusing. Nor is it merely a coastal issue anyway. Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters Saturday: "This is not a coastal threat alone. This is a very large area. This is going to be well inland."

Uccellini, who estimated that 60 million people will feel the storm's wrath somehow, said: "This storm as it grows and moves back to the coast on Monday and Tuesday, the circulation of this storm will extend all the way from the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, toward the Carolinas up into New England and southern Canada. It's really going to be an expansive storm system."

It's a topsy-turvy storm, too. The far northern areas of the East, around Maine, should get much warmer weather as the storm hits, practically shirt-sleeve weather for early November, Masters and Uccellini said. Around the Mason-Dixon line, look for much cooler temperatures. West Virginia and even as far south as North Carolina could see snow. Lots of it.

It is what NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco meant Thursday when he called it "Frankenstorm" in a forecast, an allusion to Mary Shelley's gothic creature of synthesized elements.

Cisco and others have called this storm unprecedented. Uccellini, who has written histories about winter storms, said the closest analogs are the 1991 Perfect Storm that struck northern New England and a November 1950 storm. But this is likely to be stronger and bigger than the Perfect Storm; it will strike farther south, and affect far more people.

In fact, the location among those with the highest odds for gale-force winds in the country's most populous place: New York City. New York has nearly a 2-in-3 chance of gale force winds by Tuesday afternoon.

One of the major components in the ferocity of the storm is that it is swinging inland ? anywhere from Delaware to New York, but most likely southern New Jersey ? almost a due west turn, which is unusual, Uccellini said. So the worst of the storm surge could be north, not south, of landfall. And that gets right to New York City and its vulnerable subways, which are under increasing risk of flooding, he said.

"There is a potential for a huge mess in New York if this storm surge forecast is right," Masters said.

Add to that the hundreds of miles of waves and the overall intensity of this storm, Uccellini said in an interview, and "we are in the middle of a very serious situation."

Forecasters are far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they are about winds.

There are several measures for hurricanes. And one NOAA research tool that measures the intensity of hurricane overall kinetic energy forecasts a 5.2 for Sandy's waves and storm surge damage potential. That's on a scale of 0 to 6, putting it up with historic storms, such as Katrina. It rates a much smaller number for wind.

Because of the mix with the winter storm, the wind won't be as intense as it is near the center of a hurricane. But it will reach for hundreds of miles, spreading the energy further, albeit weaker, meteorologists said.

Uccellini and Masters said they expect the central pressure of the storm to drop to a near record low for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast for any time of year. That is a big indication of energy and helps power the wind. This puts it on par with the 1938 storm that hit Long Island and New England, killing 800 people, or the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

Wall Street makes plans to open Monday even as Sandy bears down

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock exchanges and Wall Street banks are sending employees into Manhattan on Sunday to stay in hotels and coworkers' homes, as markets prepare to open for business on Monday even as Hurricane Sandy brings public transportation to a halt.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to slam into the East Coast on Monday night, bringing torrential rains, high winds, severe flooding and power outages, forecasters said. The rare "super storm," created by an Arctic jetstream wrapping itself around a tropical storm, could be the biggest to hit the U.S. mainland.

New York's subway, bus and rail systems will suspend service by 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday (2300 GMT) which means there will be no public transportation into or within the city. About 8.5 million commuters use the Metropolitan Transit Authority's rail, bus and subway lines daily.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg closed public schools and ordered an evacuation of 375,000 people in coastal areas including the Battery Park neighborhood, just a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, City Island in the Bronx and Staten Island.

Spokesmen for NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group said they still planned to open exchanges for trading on Monday, but would monitor the situation for any changes.

The New York Stock Exchange has arranged accommodations for essential staff near its lower-Manhattan headquarters, while other employees have been encouraged to work from home or alternate locations, said a person familiar with the situation.

"Everybody on Wall Street has hotels booked for essential personnel," this person said, adding that the stock exchange would need several hundred people, compared to its usual 1,000, on the floor to keep trading going.

The major exchanges and most big trading firms have alternate trading facilities if downtown Manhattan is inaccessible, but the storm's wide path may affect a number of sites in the New York metropolitan area. Authorities have warned of possible widespread power outages that could last for days.

"The word going around the floor on Friday was people should expect this to happen. In the event the exchange does not open, they will trade electronically though," said Ken Polcari, managing director for ICAP Equities.

"If that happened, it's probably going to be very muted volume," he said.

A spokesman for Goldman Sachs , whose office is located within the evacuation area, said the firm has plans in place to ensure the safety of its people and that operations continue. Representatives of other large financial institutions, such as Citigroup Inc and JP Morgan Chase , described similar plans.

BACKUP POWER

The NYSE has not had to delay the open for a weather-related issue since a blizzard hit the New York area in January 1996.

In August 2011, officials feared Hurricane Irene would flood lower Manhattan and cripple business in the world's financial capital. Wall Street firms activated contingency plans and New York City ordered evacuations in lower Manhattan and shut down its mass transit system on a Saturday night in anticipation of the storm. But the flooding was minor and there were no major disruptions at the exchanges.

Before the storm passed, however, NYSE officials said while they planned to open, the final decision hinged on whether city subways were running and whether New York Harbor waters flooded low-lying downtown.

Flooding is one of the more likely worst-case scenarios that forecasters see as Sandy pushes water onto land Monday evening.

Sandy's storm surge has the potential to flood New York city's subway system if the storm arrives at or near Monday evening's high tide around 9 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT), according to hurricane specialist Jeff Masters, who writes a Weather Underground blog. Monday is also a full moon, which creates an extra-high tide.

The NYSE has a backup power generator and said that should it have to shut down floor trading at 11 Wall Street, all NYSE-listed securities would trade on NYSE Arca, the company's fully electronic exchange. NYSE's servers are located in Mahwah, New Jersey, while Nasdaq has servers in Carteret, New Jersey.

"Preparations are in place for our U.S. markets to operate normally on Monday. If conditions change, notifications will be posted," the New York Stock Exchange said in a statement on its website.

Nasdaq OMX also said it has plans in place to ensure markets operate normally on Monday and Tuesday.

Both exchanges are in contact with trading firms and regulators, which include the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), about the potential impact of the storm, said people with knowledge of the plans.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association said it has not made any recommendations to close on Monday.

"SIFMA is currently monitoring the storm's projected path and we are in contact with public authorities and our members as we assess the possible impact of the storm to the financial services sector within the NYC area," SIFMA spokeswoman Katrina Cavalli said on Sunday morning in an e-mailed statement.

Some financial industry events have been postponed. The SIFMA Internal Auditors Society Annual Conference scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in New York has been delayed to December. The Bond Buyer's 501(c)3 SuperConference which was to take place October 28-30, will also be postponed.

Magnetic brain stimulation treats depression independent of sleep effect

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? While powerful magnetic stimulation of the frontal lobe of the brain can alleviate symptoms of depression, those receiving the treatment did not report effects on sleep or arousal commonly seen with antidepressant medications, researchers say.

"People's sleep gets better as their depression improves, but the treatment doesn't itself cause sedation or insomnia." said Dr. Peter B. Rosenquist, Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

The finding resulted from a secondary analysis of a study of 301 patients at 23 sites comparing the anti-depressive effects of the Neuronetics Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy System to sham (placebo) treatment in patients resistant to antidepressant medications. TMS sessions were given for 40 minutes, five days a week for six weeks. Initial findings, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry in 2007, were the primary evidence in the Food and Drug Administration's approval of TMS for depression. The secondary review reaffirmed TMS's effectiveness in depression but revealed no differences in rates of insomnia or sleepiness among those who got actual and sham (placebo) therapy. Patients in the treatment group were also no more likely to request medication for insomnia or anxiety.

"It's important for us to understand the full range of the effects of any treatment we give," said Rosenquist, corresponding author of the study in the journal Psychiatric Research. The new findings will assuage worries of sleep-related side effects and remind physicians to remain alert to residual insomnia in depressed patients they are treating with TMS, the researchers report.

Sleep problems are a common side effect of major antidepressants: some drugs sedate patients while others stimulate them and increase insomnia. Insomnia occurs in 50-90 percent of patients with major depressive disorder. Other depressed patients complain they sleep too much. The good news is that TMS does not contribute to insomnia or oversleeping.

"One of the many bad things about depression is that often patients cannot sleep. We think it's a significant symptom," Rosenquist said. "If patients can't sleep, it really adds to their distress, and even increases the likelihood of suicide. We need antidepressant treatments that patients can tolerate so that they will stay with the treatment, which takes weeks to fully achieve. Our study adds to the evidence showing that TMS has remarkably few side effects." Patients often seek TMS as an option or adjunct to medication to avoid medication side effects.

"Mood disorders are associated with widespread structural and functional changes in the human brain, which can be reversed with successful treatment," Rosenquist said. "Clinical researchers are working to find the optimal way to restore normal brain function."

TMS targets the prefrontal cortex of the brain, involved in mood regulation as well as other higher-order functions like planning, evaluating and decision-making. In this procedure, patients sit in a recliner and receive brief pulses of a MRI strength magnet held against the front of the head. The magnetic energy of TMS causes the brain cells closest to the surface of the brain to increase their activity which in turn influences the activity of the brain as a whole.

Major Depressive Disorder affects approximately 14.8 million, or about 6.7 percent of American adults in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. It's the leading cause of disability in ages 15 to 44. Despite the numbers, Rosenquist concedes that it's not clear what causes depression or exactly how antidepressants and other therapies, such as TMS, work. "It's an important puzzle and the work continues. We are excited to be a part of this effort at Georgia Health Sciences University."

Choosing a suitable skateboard

Published on: October 24, 2012 by Paul

Tracing its origin back to surfing in California, skateboarding has now become a popular activity. While it can be a fun and interesting pastime, it is important to know how to skateboard properly along with the different do?s, don?ts and tips and tricks to prevent unwanted injuries. One of the crucial things to remember before skateboarding is choosing the most appropriate skateboard.

Choosing a skateboard is no simple job. With the mind boggling variety of skateboards available in the present day, it becomes very difficult to choose a particular one, especially if you are a beginner. However, here are a few things to remember when going shopping for skateboards.

First and foremost remember that a hefty price tag always does not guarantee quality and a cheaper one is not a good one. Do not let the price of the skateboard be your only deciding criteria. When choosing a skateboard the top priority should be your skating style and how you skate, for instance when skateboarding, whether you prefer a long or broad board or a small one or big one.

Also your body weight should be taken into consideration. For those who have a small stature, a small board will work fine but if you are on the bigger side, it is always wiser to opt for a solid deck which will be able to give more support.

Before buying a skateboard, it is advisable to do a little research; go around a few different shops before deciding on one. This will give you a better idea about the styles and varieties available as well as allow you to compare the prices. You can also ask the opinion of the shopkeepers; most of the attendants are skaters or former skaters and can offer valuable advice which can help in your decision making; this is especially true if you are new to the world of skateboarding. Apart from deciding on the kind and width of board or deck you want, also take into consideration the quality of the wheels. Test a few of the boards to get a feel of which is the most suitable and appropriate one.

A clever way to get a good deal is to check the online stores. After deciding which skateboard you want, do a quick search and see whether it is available in the online stores at a lesser price. Remember, do not buy a skateboard in a hurry, spend a little bit of time deciding and choosing if you want a quality one.

Challenge Seeks Smartphone GPS Jamming Detector | Science ...

By Alan, on October 26th, 2012

A new challenge on InnoCentive asks for a method of detecting GPS signal jamming devices using smartphones. The competiton (free registration required) has an award of $20,000 and a deadline of 3 January 2013. InnoCentive in Waltham, Massachusetts conducts open-innovation, crowd-sourcing competitions for corporate and organization sponsors.

Global Positioning System (GPS) signals can be drowned out by competing noise sent on the same frequency, and as a result, can be dangerous for navigation systems on ambulances or busses dependent on GPS, as well as causing untold inconvenience for drivers with GPS units in their cars or trucks. Jamming GPS signals is illegal in many jurisdictions, and GPS jamming devices are illegal in the U.S.

Despite education campaigns and enforcement actions by the Federal Communications Commission, GPS jamming is technically a simple task, and jamming devices remain relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain; in some cases they are sold openly. Detecting the presence of these devices has so far required a large number of sometimes expensive sensors, to cover the same area as a cheap jamming device.

The sponsor of this challenge, not disclosed by InnoCentive, seeks a solution to this problem that can be implemented with one or more smartphones and described in a written proposal. InnoCentive says the sponsor is particularly interested in robust and scalable solutions that can detect the location of a GPS jammer with hardware, software, or a combination of the two. If a smartphone software app is proposed, the proposal needs to explain why smartphone owners would be motivated to use the proposed app.

Written proposals submitted by entrants in the competition will be reviewed by the sponsor. Competition winners will be asked to transfer a non-exclusive intellectual property license to the sponsor to practice the submitted solution. InnoCentive says the sponsor may be interested in engaging entrants in follow-on work for the design of a prototype.
